In recent years, lighting manufacturers and developers have moved from traditional light sources to LED-based solid-state lighting (SSL) technology. LED has many advantages, such as excellent energy efficiency, but point light sources also have some problems in general lighting applications, such as glare. Choosing the best polymer
When choosing a thermoplastic type for a light diffuser or lens, there are few candidate materials that can be considered. The most important function is transparency. The polymer in its natural form must be highly transparent to minimize the loss of LED efficiency during light diffusion.
Technically, a small number of engineered polymers can be considered an appropriate solution. However, when cost is considered, only polycarbonate (PC) and acrylic (polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA) are left as possible options, with a basic cost of 2 to 3 US dollars per kilogram. The price of other engineering or super polymers can reach US$20/kg or even higher.
Polycarbonate or acrylic
There is no clear answer when considering whether to choose a PC or PMMA. PC and PMMA are very similar in terms of price, ease of processing and optical characteristics. However, the comparison is over and the choice depends on the application requirements. This table compares the properties that manufacturers and developers should consider when choosing between two polymers.
Manufacturers and developers need to prioritize attributes to make the best decision. For example, if plastic parts are designed for indoor service, the priority of mechanical properties may be lower, and acrylic is the best choice. If optical performance is very important and the illuminance level is required to be as high as possible, then acrylic may be the right choice. On the other hand, if fire resistance is required due to building standards or fire risk, polycarbonate will be the only option.
